Great Trail wk2 d6

Yes, I have said it way too many times but again today was a relatively short day. It had to be a short day in order for us to be in a place we could attend church tomorrow. There are not any congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in this region so our destination was Grand Forks because there is a small congregation.

Since it was a short day we were able to enjoy private dock at Christina Lake. The Sunflower B&B is the place to stay if you ever come this way.

The ride from Christina Lake to Grand Forks was only about 40 km and we were able to continue on the rail trail.

I’m not certain that everyone is fully appreciating the incredible nature of this Canadian rail trail. We will be riding on it for the rest of the upcoming week traveling almost 400 km. I don’t think there’s anything even close to that in the United States. And as usual, it took us past more beautiful places like Cascade Falls.

Interestingly, Grand Forks was settled in large part by a set of pacifist Russians called Doukhobors. Look that one up for a little history and religious lesson. Again, I also have to comment on the Socialist nature of the Canadian government in a positive way. This city of less than 5,000 people has some pretty incredible community Resources. The BMX course alone is to die for but you can also do curling if bicycling doesn’t appeal to you in the local curling rink.

I also have to speak again about that Canadian nature. The people here are strange compared to Americans. This lady was sweeping the street after a festival they have the night before. She wasn’t the only one I saw sweeping the street. Who does that? Surely no one in America

  1. In 1986, I travelled to Vancouver for Expo ’86 and we stayed in Grand Forks. There was a restaurant, in a hotel I think, that was run by a Dookaboer lady and the food was “to die for” delicious. Not sure if it is even there anymore but certainly, memorable.

  2. We did have some amazing food but it was at The Wooden Spoon. I also had a wonderful linger longer lunch provided by the after church on Sunday. However, I would love to know where it was you ate so we could go there sometime.
