Great Trail wk4 d3

Today we swam from Langley tune in West Vancouver. The weather report indicated a 40% chance of rain. We interpreted that positively but erroneously. Apparently 40% in Vancouver means that 40% of the time you were getting wet directly from falling rain and the other 60% you’re getting wet from water dripping off of the dense vegetation. I hate to say it, but it was a bit of along day again. No doubt, no one feels sorry for us nor should they as we still are blessed to be in this beautiful place and the chance we have to be together.Early on today we went over our first major bridge heading back to the north. Well the bridge itself was impressive oh, the most amazing part was the amount of construction and energy that had gone into a bike lane including a slowly ramp spiral up-to-date private bike lane across the bridge. It was definitely an improvement over our last Bridge Crossing.Once we were thoroughly soaked, the rain actually let up briefly. We continue riding through both industrial and urban areas of the city’s leading into Vancouver. As we entered Coquitlam the rain came mercilessly. At the same time the route wandered around and through every little Park on our way to Vancouver. The parks were incredible and especially in light of them being in the middle towns. And some places you felt like you could have been a hundred miles in the woods and yet cars were just a half a mile away. With everything wet and navigation an absolute necessity it became a bit frustrating. Touch screen with wet gloves and drips of water hitting the screen does not work well. Admittedly I was not on Route few times but not lost because I knew I was in British Columbia.Eventually, when you reach the inlet between Vancouver and North Vancouver. They were soaking wet and starting to get cold. What do you do when you’re freezing wet and you just reach the ocean? You order fish and chips and according to their umbrellas they were actually world famous. Then you wash them down with hot cocoa. Admittedly they were quite good but likely the halibut was flown in from Alaska. It was an outdoor Cafe for Charlie or we would not have been able to go in. We were a muddy, soggy mess. Amazingly, rain does not stop activities in Vancouver. We passed two different swimming pools where people were swimming Outdoors like it was a regular summer day. Apparently rain here does not come with lightning or they don’t care.I tried to follow the great Trail route on the app a bit further. I finally gave up after it lead us straight up the only mountain in the Vancouver area and then basically straight back down. It became hike a bike I took a picture of the app just to show the ridiculous steepness. And this was only 1/2 kilometer of a couple of kilometers. The high location likely gave great views but we were in a cloud. I gave up on the app and used Google Maps. It took us directly through downtown Vancouver but being such a bike-friendly city there was a road just for bikes that worked out very nicely.

Passing through Vancouver we then entered famous Stanley Park. We would have loved to pedal all around the park but we were worn out and a bit Frozen. We opted for the bike ride over Lions Gate Bridge into northwest Vancouver. Looking back, we could see Vancouver has the clouds slightly cleared and the rain finally stopped. And here is your weird BC sign for the day. At stop signs and traffic lights people participated in a brief meditation and yoga exercise.Photos

  1. You managed to find the only rain and moisture in the entire western US and Canada – it’s been super dry in southern Utah – wish we could swap! Maybe it was good to find that “calmed neighborhood” after a couple of epic days 🙂 Hope the weather clears out and you finish on a wonderfully positive note. Thanks for sharing another one of your epic adventures with us – we’ve been there in spirit every day!
