Day 10: Bonners Ferry, ID to Yaak, MT

Another relatively easy day from Bonners Ferry to Yaak. It was all pavement and that made it additionally easy. Gloria wasn’t too thrilled about the first 20 miles as it was down Highway 2. Of course, a busy highway in Northern Idaho/Montana means that not only can wild animals cross the road without concern but typically a snail can make it across before getting squished by the next vehicle.

This is a bridge not far from Bonners Ferry. As you can see it’s Rush Hour :-). The countryside was beautiful as we headed east back towards our starting and ending point in Eureka.

It turns out that you don’t have to play to win the lotto. Sharp-eyed Gloria noticed sparkley as we rode down the highway. We started picking them up and made a whopping $5

About 10 miles East and we were back in Montana. Did I mention that this is a remote area. There might be internet access somewhere but this blue booth was our connection to the world.

That remoteness may play a role in their political persuasion. Is it possible that people in this area have never actually heard Trump speak?

After 20 miles we turned northward entering an area that was even more remote if that’s possible. We were headed towards the Canadian border but would never actually make it – sad for Gloria.

We were paralleling the Yaak river and it was beautiful. Yaak Falls provided a nice place for lunch and also a mist shower to cool off.

We eventually arrived at yaak River Lodge. If you live a boring enough life that you’ve actually read my previous posts and adventurers, you might remember the lodge in Hartsel Colorado. In 2018 when we were riding the Divide we showed up at the lodge and found no one home. The same thing happened here but I was able to get the owner on the phone. He said go in and he would try to find his caretaker. Later a neighbor showed up and said the caretaker was too sick to help. She also said she would be cooking our breakfast.  From her looks it appeared she may be an expert at cooking something other than food. Regardless, we had the building to ourselves and took advantage of the kitchen as well as the laundry.

We did need to ride another couple miles to get food in the thriving Metropolis of Yaak. There are 2 bars, each that serve food, and an attached store to one of the bars. The bar across the street from where we ate had an interesting assortment of flags. Respectfully, they were flying the Canadian flag lower than all the others.

Back at the lodge we enjoyed the Beautiful backyard and the quiet River.

  1. My oldest sister, Cheryl , lives in Bonners Ferry but not in town. She lives a bit north on a beautiful acreage. We went down there a few years ago for a family gathering and stayed at the Log Inn.
