Day 56. I had a wonderful Sabbath with Nick, Caleb, and Ridge. Since they had a truck, we were able to drive to Houghton up on the Keweenaw peninsula and attend a branch of the church. We also enjoyed some walks at Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountain State Park and along the beach. We had a bunch of good food that Nick bought the day before for us.

Day 57. Silver City to Baraga. 64 miles. 3427 miles TTD. 2230 Feet elevation. Weather was perfect other than just a little bit of headwind some of the way.

After breakfast, I was on my own again as Nick and the boys drove off I pedaled off. Likely, no one else enjoys geography like me. I even considered making it a major in college. Of course, it would be one of those majors like English literature of the 1400s in terms of getting a job. As I’ve noted before using a cell phone for navigation is somewhat annoying as I would love to be looking at a full size map rather than a 2×3-in screen. Because of my geography love, you’re going to get some geography lesson today.

The boys kept wondering if they could see across the lake. The fact that it’s called Lake Superior should be some indication as to that impossibility. For the last 2 days, we’ve been on the shore near the western edge of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It’s the most prominent piece of land jutting out into Lake Superior from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The name is from the Ojibwa Nation. In fact, the upper half of the peninsula is an island. There is a canal that cuts through the peninsula. On the tip of the peninsula is Copper Harbor. And, you guessed it, copper was mined there in the 1800s. The Rock in this area is some of the oldest exposed rock in the world dating at about 1.1 billion years old.

After leaving the boys this morning, I began my pedal across the base of the peninsula. The peninsula is about 60 miles long, and I pedaled about 60 miles across until I came to Baraga on the East Edge of the peninsula.

If the boys had stayed with me, they could actually see across Lake Superior or at least across the inlet where I’m staying the night. It was a relatively uneventful ride but pleasantly easy and relatively short. A little bit of headwind was annoying but never incapacitating. Tomorrow, I will head further into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on my way back to ontario.
many years ago, like in the mid 1980’s they opened a harness racetrack in Escanaba which is in the upper peninsula. Because it is a vacation area they thought it would do well with a summer meet but unfortunately it only lasted a few years. I mention this because I was offered work at that track but passed because I was already committed to work as the Presiding Judge on the Quad Cities on the Illinois/Iowa border. I knew someone who did work there and he loved the area and really appreciated the weather which was cool for that time of year. Enjoy and stay well and safe, God Bless.
